Are You Still Carrying the Weight of a Narcissist’s Voice?

Do you find yourself second-guessing your own memory, apologizing for things you didn’t do, or feeling like you’re never quite enough? Did you grow up with a parent whose love was conditional, whose moods dictated the whole house, whose words left you doubting your own reality? Are you now in a relationship — or recovering from one — where the same patterns replay?

If so, you’re not imagining it, and you’re not “too sensitive.” You’re someone whose nervous system was shaped inside a narcissistic dynamic — and healing is absolutely possible.

What Narcissistic Abuse Actually Does

Narcissistic abuse is a form of psychological manipulation that slowly erodes your sense of self. It often looks like love from the outside, which is why it’s so confusing from the inside. As Bessel van der Kolk explains in The Body Keeps the Score, long-term relational trauma doesn’t just live in memory — it lives in the nervous system.

Over time, narcissistic abuse shows up as:

  • Chronic self-doubt — questioning your own perceptions, memories, and feelings
  • Toxic shame — a persistent sense of being defective, even when logically you know better
  • Hypervigilance — constantly scanning for the next outburst, silent treatment, or criticism
  • People-pleasing — abandoning your needs to keep the peace or avoid their reaction
  • Identity confusion — losing touch with what you actually want, feel, or believe
  • Psychosomatic symptoms — gut issues, autoimmune flares, chronic fatigue, anxiety, insomnia

These aren’t character flaws — they’re adaptations. As Gabor Maté writes in When the Body Says No, unresolved stress eventually speaks through the body. Your symptoms are the truth your body is telling.

How Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Works Here

True Health Counselling uses the Integrative Somatic Trauma Healing Approach — a body-based, trauma-informed framework designed for the nervous system impact of long-term narcissistic abuse. Together we:

  • Regulate your nervous system through Somatic Experiencing, so the body stops bracing against threats that are no longer there
  • Integrate disowned parts through Gestalt therapy — reclaiming the voice, needs, and desires that went underground
  • Meet your shadow with grace — uncovering the survival patterns without shame
  • Rebuild self-trust — learning to hear your own inner voice again, clearly, without their narration in your head
  • Set loving boundaries — not harsh walls, but clear, self-honouring limits
  • Heal the body — addressing the psychosomatic symptoms that talk therapy alone can’t reach

Why Talk Therapy Alone Often Isn’t Enough

Many clients come to me after years of talk therapy, medication, and specialist appointments — still feeling something essential has been missed. That missing piece is usually the body. Narcissistic abuse dysregulates the limbic and autonomic nervous systems. Insight alone doesn’t reach that level. Somatic work does.

My approach integrates evidence-based modalities (Somatic Experiencing, Gestalt, DBT, mindfulness, relational healing) with holistic and — if you want it — faith-based support. You can have the clinical rigour and the soul-level depth. Both, not either-or.

Who This Is For

Narcissistic abuse therapy may be a fit if you:

  • Grew up with a narcissistic, emotionally absent, or volatile parent
  • Are in — or recently left — a relationship with a narcissistic partner
  • Work under a narcissistic boss and feel it is affecting your health
  • Struggle with complex PTSD, codependency, or love addiction from the abuse
  • Experience trauma-linked physical symptoms — IBS, autoimmune issues, chronic pain, anxiety
  • Want a therapist who understands narcissistic dynamics deeply, not just at a textbook level

My Personal Story

I bring over a decade of lived experience healing from narcissistic abuse myself. I’ve climbed out of the patterns learned in dysfunctional family dynamics — through somatic work, shadow work, and faith. That journey informs every session. I understand because I’ve walked it.
